The Hills of Kingsgrove
Eileen was the second of five children to John Hill and Margaret Whalan: Dorothy was born 5 February 1916, Eileen was born 26 May 1918, John E. (Jack) was born 11 April 1921 and twins Lorna and Stan were born 15 December 1923.
The Hills and Whalans can be traced back to Co. Leitrim in the north and Co. Killkenny in the south of Ireland.

John Clarence Hill
John Clarence was the son of John James Hill b. 1861 Kilturbold, N Ireland? and Teresa Revitt, Manchester. Teresa was employed on domestic duties, Grafton, prior to her marriage and John was a printer, compositor of Grafton. They were married at St Philips CoE, Sydney on 18 November 1890.
John James was the son of Martha Boothe b. 1836 Aughakilbrack, C Leitrim and John Hill who were married in 1856. They arrived in Australia in 1862 and lived in Villiers Street, Grafton.
Martha was the daughter of George Boothe, farmer and Ann Alexander. Martha died 3 January 1902, aged 86 and is buried in the CoE cemetery, Grafton.
John Clarence was born in 1892 in Grafton, NSW. He had a sister Beatrice Marie, who married James Madden, and a brother, Wiliam.
John lived at Petersham before his marriage to Margaret. He worked as a linesman/ clerk in the NSW Public Service (PMG?).
John married Margaret Ann Whalan on 17 March 1915 at St Peter’s Catholic Church, Surry Hills
He died at 106 Armitree Street, Kingsgove in 1951 aged 59. He is buried at Rookwood Cemetery.
Margaret Ann Whalan
Margaret was born on 27 April 1889 in Eversleigh, Dumaresq/ Armidale, the fourth of 8 children.
Margaret married John Clarence Hill (Postal Sorter/Clerk) on 17 March 1915 at St Peter’s Catholic Church, Surry Hills
Prior to her marriage, she worked as a saleswoman and lived at Riley Street, Surry Hills.
Margaret and John lived at 106 Armitree Street, Kingsgrove. They had five children: Jack, Dorothy, Eileen, and twins, Stanley and Lorna; Dorothy (daughter) and Fred Dobbs and their three sons lived next door at 104 Armitree Street.
Margaret died in 1963, aged 64, in Sydney.
Margaret was the daughter of Edward Whalan b. 20 August 1857 Wingham, d. Sydney 1933 and Mary Ellen McDonald (b. Tamworth 1863, d Sydney 1917). Edward and Mary Ellen were married in 1882 in Tamworth
Edward was the son of Mary Lee b. 1836 Ireland d. Sydney 1813 and David Whalan b. 1832 Ireland, d. Sydney
David and Mary were married in 1853 in Thomastown
David was the son of Patrick Whalan b. 1832 and Katherine Murphy (both Ireland)
Mary was the daughter of Edmond Lee and Mary Lanan b. 1836? Thomastown, Kilkenny (both Ireland)
